PMDD

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a severe, hormone-sensitive mood disorder that occurs during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, typically in the one to two weeks before menstruation. Unlike typical premenstrual symptoms, PMDD can significantly impact emotional well-being, relationships, work, and daily functioning. Board-certified psychiatrist Dr. Yana Bekker provides comprehensive evaluation and individualized treatment for PMDD. If you’re struggling with severe premenstrual mood symptoms, schedule a consultation today.

What is PMDD?

PMDD is characterized by significant emotional and physical symptoms linked to cyclical hormonal changes. Current research suggests that individuals with PMDD may have an increased sensitivity to normal hormonal fluctuations, leading to pronounced mood and nervous system symptoms during specific phases of the menstrual cycle.

Symptoms typically improve shortly after menstruation begins and recur predictably each cycle.

What are the symptoms of PMDD?

Symptoms may include:

  • Severe mood swings or irritability
  • Depression, hopelessness, or tearfulness
  • Anxiety, tension, or feeling overwhelmed
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Changes in sleep or appetite
  • Difficulty concentrating or mental fog
  • Decreased interest in usual activities
  • Increased emotional sensitivity or interpersonal conflict
  • Physical symptoms such as bloating, headaches, or breast tenderness

If symptoms are significantly affecting your daily life, relationships, or ability to function, professional evaluation is recommended.

How is PMDD treated?

Dr. Bekker begins with a comprehensive assessment of psychiatric, medical, hormonal, and lifestyle factors contributing to symptoms. When appropriate, additional medical evaluation or laboratory testing may be recommended to identify contributing conditions.

Treatment is individualized and may include medication management, lifestyle and sleep optimization, stress reduction strategies, nutritional support, and coordination with therapy when appropriate.

The goal of treatment is to reduce symptom severity, improve emotional regulation and functioning, and help patients regain a greater sense of stability and quality of life throughout the menstrual cycle.
